Duke of Edinburgh’s Award - volunteering

We are delighted to be partnered with the Duke of Edinburgh’s (DofE) Award, where students can do the volunteering part of their Bronze, Silver or Gold Award by writing letters for our Donate A Letter programme.

It’s really easy to get involved. Simply sign up to our Donate A Letter programme, clearly stating that you are a DofE Award student and we’ll send you a pack with everything you need to get started. All we need from you is one letter a week (although we are happy for a few to be posted together once a month to save on postage).

Here’s how it all works….

Feedback we’ve had from students taking part has been wonderful - with many finding writing for us rewarding, helpful in building skills, and (for the parents mainly) a welcomed time away from screens.

We have hundreds of students writing for us at any one time - with many choosing to continue supporting our work after they’ve completed their Award. Liv Bowditch, seen below, is the perfect example of a DofE student who has remained an active volunteer for us since signing up to write as part of her Award several years ago.

Liv shared the story of her volunteering for us with the media last Christmas after being invited by the Princess of Wales to her special carol concert in recognition of volunteers in the charity sector.

Liv’s volunteering story was featured in every national paper and on many news channels - with Liv going on to Good Morning Britain on Christmas Eve to talk about it too. Liv’s journey with us has gone from DofE letter writer, to advocate, spokesperson and campaigner. And she still writes letters for us too. You can see one of Liv’s interviews here.

DofE writer, Liv, has continued to support us years after completing her Award - and is now an active spokesperson about our work.

Writing for us is also a great way to bring families together. The Jourdain family from Eastbourne enjoyed gathering together every Sunday evening to write letters to support their daughter, Isla, who had registered to write for her Award with us.

They shared their story with the media to help inspire others. And it worked, with lots of DofE students registering to write for us, and several parents joining in too! You can see their story here.

The Jourdain family started writing for us after their daughter, Isla (far left), signed up for her Silver DofE Award’s Volunteering section with us.
